Breast Cancer Awareness: The Life-Saving Power of Annual Exams

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, a time when we unite globally to raise awareness, support survivors, and promote early detection. At Abilene Primary Care, we’re committed to empowering women through education and preventive care. One of the most important steps women can take for their health? Scheduling an annual well-woman exam.

Why Breast Cancer Awareness Matters

Breast cancer is the most common cancer in women worldwide, affecting 1 in 8 women in the U.S. during their lifetime. While the statistics can be alarming, there's also good news: early detection saves lives.

When breast cancer is caught early—before it has spread—it is far more treatable. The 5-year survival rate for localized breast cancer is 99%. That’s why regular screenings and annual exams are so crucial.

What Is a Well-Woman Exam?

A well-woman exam is a yearly visit to your primary care provider or OB-GYN to assess your overall health, specifically your reproductive and breast health. It is an essential part of preventive care.

During a well-woman visit, your provider may:

  • Perform a clinical breast exam

  • Discuss your personal and family history of breast cancer

  • Recommend a mammogram, if appropriate based on your age and risk factors

  • Address menstrual, hormonal, or reproductive health concerns

  • Offer guidance on self-breast exams

  • Screen for other cancers, STIs, and chronic conditions

When Should You Start Breast Cancer Screenings?

The guidelines can vary, but in general:

  • Women aged 40-44: Should have the option to begin annual mammograms

  • Women aged 45-54: Should get mammograms every year

  • Women 55 and older: Can switch to every two years or continue annually

If you have a family history or genetic risk, your provider may recommend earlier or more frequent screenings.

The Role of Your Primary Care Provider

Your primary care provider is your first line of defense. We help identify risks, order screenings, and follow up on any findings. We also support you emotionally—because navigating cancer risk, testing, or treatment requires compassionate care.

Annual visits help build a trusting relationship, so if concerns ever arise, you already have a team who knows your health history and is ready to act.

Your Health Is Worth Prioritizing

Life gets busy—but your health should never take a back seat. Taking just one hour a year for a well-woman exam can mean catching something early—or simply getting peace of mind.

This October, as pink ribbons remind us of the importance of breast cancer awareness, let it also be a reminder to:
